Cognitive Behavioural Therapy in Central Croydon and Shirley – South London

What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is a goal-orientated and practical form of therapy. Where some therapies focus on the unconscious meaning behind behaviours by looking at your past, CBT usually targets your present situation, and helps you to identify and practice effective strategies to overcome your difficulties. The basic principles of CBT were established using a combination of behavioural and cognitive psychology. The cognitive component looks at how your thoughts influence your feelings and mood and the behavioural part analyses the connection between your behaviours and thoughts and feelings. Through this combination, therapists can help you change the way you think and behave, which will ultimately change the way you feel.

CBT Foundations:

  • Collaborative – We will work together to help you understand your negative thoughts and how they influence your feelings and behaviour.

  • Present Focused – CBT looks at your current situation and does not ask you to dwell on the past.

  • Short Term Therapy – Being goal-orientated and practical means that it only takes a few sessions to deal with a certain problem.

How Can CBT Help?

CBT is recommended by the NHS and NICE to help treat anxiety, panic attacks, specific phobias, depression, postnatal depression, stress, obsessive compulsive disorder and post-traumatic stress.

CBT helps you to change negative thinking by looking at the meaning attached to certain situations and how these meanings are influencing thoughts and behaviours. By changing your thoughts, you are then able to alter the way you feel and behave in a positive way.

Working Together

Therapy can be hard work at times and I will always acknowledge this. CBT is a team effort as we have to work together to identify your problems and create strategies to overcome your difficulties. You will be given exercises to do between therapy sessions which will help you achieve the required changes. I have seen how CBT has transformed many people’s lives for the better, and I know that all work on your part is well worth the effort.

My Expertise

I am experienced in helping people to develop their confidence and assertiveness using CBT techniques. I designed and ran a group, based on the Hope and Heimberg’s Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Social Anxiety, but expanded to include assertiveness skills. I taught members how to challenge their self-critical beliefs, develop their self-acceptance and increase their confidence so that they can ultimately use their assertiveness skills when dealing with challenging situations.

I always work according to the guidelines of the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).
